THE ART OF THE SOLO TRAVELLER.

By Katie Gillies

Why decide to travel solo?

There’s no waiting for the right time or factoring in what anyone else wants to do. No budgets to stick to other than your own. You can go – easy.

I’ve always thought that when you travel solo, you’re the best version of yourself because you have to make more of an effort with everyone you meet along the way. It’s easy when you’re travelling with a partner or friends, to only interact with each other – but solo travel pushes you out of your comfort zone making you much more open to meeting new people.

That said, it can be daunting to make the decision to book a solo trip for the first time - but I promise you that once you try it, it’ll be the only way to you want to travel.

The Surf Experience Makes It Easy

The Surf Experience makes it super easy to travel solo – actually the majority of our guests arrive alone. From the moment you step in the door, you will be welcomed by our fab hosting team who will explain how everything works and answer any questions you have. Depending on when you arrive, you’ll be going surfing, have some time to explore the town, or head straight to the rooftop for a beer. We have a WhatsApp group we’ll add you to on check-in, so you can keep in touch with staff and the other guests. You’ll join a fun group of likeminded individuals each day to surf and there will be suggested plans for dinner every night, so you won’t have to worry about being alone at any point. We have a family of guests that return each year and as soon as you get here, you’ll understand why.

My story?

After my solo travel spiel above, I actually originally came to Portugal with some friends last August for ‘five days’. I had wanted to try surfing after watching some big wave surf competitions online, so I decided to extend my trip to include one week surfing with The Surf Experience (thinking ‘Nazare here I come’). This turned into two weeks, then volunteering and onto House / Hosting manager. It’s now April 2021 and the last time I saw my friends was when they dropped me at Lagoa bus station to get my bus to Lagos. It’s been an unreal experience during this crazy time and I’m so happy to be part of such an amazing team.

Love you all x
